Mary Ragsdale is the Human Resources Director at Broughton Hospital where she has worked for 30 years. She began her career in April 1974 as a Personnel Assistant and transitioned into several other roles in the office before becoming the Classification Specialist in July 1986, serving as the Assistant Personnel Manager and on several occasions as the Acting Personnel Manager. She became the Human Resources Director in July 2000.

HR Receptionist, Vertie Travis is the phone voice heard by the public calling Broughton’s Human Resources Office. Likewise, she is the person receiving internal calls and passing on messages when any of the HR staff are unavailable. She is also the person Broughton Hospital staff or outside visitors check in with when coming to visit other HR staff members. Vertie assists Ilene Dellinger with various HR functions such as address changes, name changes, changes in direct deposit, tax forms, etc. She assists Mary Ragsdale and the HR staff in various other clerical responsibilities. She has been a member of the HR staff since May of 2008.

Joyce Short began work at Broughton in the Human Resources Office in June 1987 as Benefits Specialist. In her current role as Recruitment Coordinator since since May 2006, she works closely with the public regarding vacant positions and job opportunities at Broughton Hospital. She works with all levels of internal staff regarding vacancy announcements, promotions, transfers, and various other personnel actions.

Linda Absher has been in Human Resources since March 1, 2002. As the Benefits Specialist, her duties include new hire orientation, retirement, insurance, and leader of the Benefits and Life Planning program, formerly known as PREPARE.

Ilene Dellinger has been in Human Resources since May 2008. Carol has a variety of duties including reinstatements, separations, address and name changes, etc.. Ilene came to Broughton from the NC School for the Deaf.

Robin Bradshaw began employment with Broughton Hospital Human Resources in February 1995. Her first position was as receptionist/personnel assistant and later she assumed the position control role. In her current position as Workers' Compensation Coordinator since November 2001, she works closely with employees regarding on-the-job injuries. She is also responsible for FMLA, short/long term disability and voluntary shared leave.

Our Employee Relations Specialist is Alicia Nexsen. Alicia, who has been at Broughton since 1997, advises management and staff on issues related to the disciplinary action and the grievance process. She is also the confidential contact for matters pertaining to unlawful state employment practices, wage garnishments, unlawful workplace harassment, discrimination and the Employee Assistance Program. Moreover, she is the hospital coordinator for the State Employee Incentive Bonus Program and employee service awards. Alicia serves on the Traumatic Incident/Employee Support (TIES) Committee, Human Resources Function Committee and the Crisis Management Team. She formerly worked in Washington, DC for the late Senator Terry Sanford and for former DHHS Secretary, Robin Britt.

Jean Buchanan began employment with Broughton Hospital Human Resources in June 2007 as the Personnel Analyst. In this role, she performs (re)classification of positions which involves the (re)assignment of a position to the most appropriate classification and level based upon the position’s assigned duties and responsibilities. Jean also manages the organizational charts. She formerly worked for Burke County Public Schools in their Payroll and then Human Resource Offices.

William F. Brown, III serves as Broughton Hospital's Safety and Communications Director. William began work at Broughton in June 1979 as a health care technician on Ward 105 (adult male admissions ward) of the former D Unit; followed by tours of duty as the supervisor of the laundry, a certified nursing assistant on Division A (adult female admissions ward), and a patient relations representative in the Admitting Office. He has served as Safety and Communications Director since 1993. His responsibilities include development and administration of the hospital's safety program, and oversight of the environment of care functions of safety, life safety, emergency preparedness, and hazardous materials and waste. Duties in communications include coordination of the hospital's radio network, pager operations, and cell phones. William serves on the hospital's Safety and Health Committee, PI Function Committee, Environment of Care Function Committee, HR Function Committee, HOPE Committee, Crisis Management Team Committee, and Radioisotope Committee, and is a member of the Hospital Management Team. He also represents Broughton Hospital on the Burke County Emergency Medical Services Quality Review Committee and the Burke County Homeland Security Committee. William has 23 years of service with the Oak Hill Fire/Rescue Department. He was one of the founding members of the Burke County Search and Rescue Team and is a graduate of the U.S. Justice Department's Weapons of Mass Destruction "COBRA" Incident Commander's School in Anniston, Alabama. Mr. Brown is a native of Burke County, and lives in the Oak Hill Community. He is married and has four children and two grandchildren. William sums up his work philosophy by saying: "My work as a CNA and laundry employee has provided me with the unique perspective of how management decisions affect the segment of the hospital that shoulder the greatest burden of the work, and my family's association with the hospital since the early 1900's has given me a sense of ownership in this institution. I have always taken great pride in assisting, in whatever way possible, and in providing quality care to our patients. Broughton Hospital is truly a great place to work."
