The primary role of Medical Services is to provide medical care to its patient population. This division is comprised of two general physicians, three internists, and fully equipped radiology and laboratory services. There are trained EKG/EEG, respiratory, occupational and physical therapy, and dental department personnel. The Medical Clinic and Employee Health area offers acute and consultative medical care to our patients and employees. Available consultative services (provided by community physicians on a contractual basis) include surgery, orthopedic, eye, neurology, dermatology, and podiatry. Other referrals are sent out on a case-by-case basis depending on medical necessity.

The core area of Medical Services is Ward 103M. Ward 103 M has 15 beds and has excellent staff that very effieciently takes care of patients on cardiac monitors, ostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and other acute post-operative patients. These wards are geared to treat physically ill patients admitted to Broughton Hospital for a primary psychiatric illness; no one is admitted from the community with primary physical problems without psychiatric illness. Patients requiring medical services beyond the scope of Medical Services’ capacity are referred to community-based medical facilities.

Medical Services operates a code blue team to attend to medical emergencies across the hospital. It is comprised of a medical physician, a physician extender, two RN’s, two certified nursing assistants, and a nurse house supervisor. There are special code pagers assigned to these personnel.

MEDICAL SERVICES DIRECTOR: Basalat Khan, MD, is the acting director of Medical Services and supervises various departments and disciplines referenced below.
|
|
|
SECRETARIAL SERVICES: Rhonda Epley offers lead secretarial services to the division and coordinates outside hospital services for our patients.
|
|
|
GENERAL PHYSICIANS AND INTERNISTS: There are three internists and two general physicians employed at Broughton Hospital. These five physicians provide and oversee the medical care for patients throughout the hospital. They also provide 24-hour emergency coverage on a rotating on-call basis.
|
|
|
LABORATORY: The lab is directed by Dr. Peter Keyser and supervised by Mark Berry. There are eight technologists who provide 24 hour on-call service throughout the year and perform various laboratory testing including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and blood bank services. The laboratory has a full time secretary.

|
RADIOLOGY: This department has three radiographers and is supervised by Sherry Helton. Routine x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and fluoroscopies are performed on site.
|
|
|
EKG/EEG/SERVICES: There are two technicians who perform EEG’s/EKG’s. There is a state of the art digital computerized EEG machine as well as EKG machines.

|
RESPIRATORY THERAPY: Dreema Hawkins is the certified respiratory therapist who oversees all the respiratory therapy equipment and respiratory treatments across the hospital.

PHYSICAL THERAPY/OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY: These services are supervised by a physical therapist. There is a part-time occupational therapist, two physical therapy assistants, and four occupational therapy assistants.
|

|
PHYSICIAN EXTENDERS: There are eight physician assistants and one family nurse practitioner who work under the close supervision of the three internists. These staff members carry out much of the medical care for patients, and assist the psychiatrists on treatment teams and in discharge planning.

DENTAL DEPARTMENT: Provides dental consultations and treatment services to our patients. Doug Veazey, DDS, is the director of the department, which includes another dentist and two dental assistants

MEDICAL CLINIC/EMPLOYEE HEALTH: The Medical Clinic/Employee Health area provides acute medical services to our patients and employees. There are consultant clinics for patients held on a scheduled basis which include internal medicine, neurology, surgery, orthopedic, eye, and dermatology. Employee Health provides PPD, Hepatitis B vaccinations, influenza vaccinations, and other screenings for new employees.
