Broughton Hospital is a regional psychiatric facility operated by North Carolina’s Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse services.  It consists of three divisions, which provide an array of specialty treatment services.

Within each division, one or more interdisciplinary treatment teams coordinate assessment and bio-psychosocial care services. A comprehensive array of physical, diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches is available, including individual, group, behavior, and milieu therapy.  Occupational, recreational, and creative arts therapies are also available.

Psychosocial interventions (PSIs) are provided for patients to help them increase the skills they will need to function in the community after they are discharged. To this end, Broughton Hospital operates treatment malls wherein patients go off the wards to enhance opportunities for skill development.

Beyond direct care services, the hospital serves as a regional educational facility. Professional training is provided within the various divisions (and with appropriate professional departmental oversight) to clinical psychology interns, to residents in psychiatry, and to pharmacy, dental, medical record, and nursing students, among others.  The Continuing Medical Education Department regularly brings to the Broughton campus prominent speakers to provide lectures and workshops. These programs are open to mental health professionals from throughout the region and address a wide range of psychiatric and psychological issues.  The holdings of the McKee Library are supplemented by interlibrary loan capability.  Computer searches of the medical and psychological literature are available through the library.
