Patient Library

The John S. McKee, Jr., MD, Memorial Library is a library utilized by staff, affiliating students, community members, members of Northwest Area Health Education Center and other allied state AHEC’s.  This library contains journal holdings, books, videos, reading and study areas, and Internet-based indexes, databases, a reference collection, and old hospital archival holdings.  Through the hospital’s membership in the Northwest AHEC Library Information Network, this library provides journal tables of contents, use of member libraries, reprints of articles, and database searches.  Membership also allows Internet access to Wake Forest University School of Medicine Library which permits access to MD Consult, Stat Ref!, OVID databases (i.e. Medline, CINAHL), as well as a selection of full-text journals and textbooks. A certified librarian trained in the use of library materials, library organization, and library management, manages the library. Members of the public occasionally seek the help of the librarian by appointment in researching the archives for a past relative who was a patient here.

The Sarah D. Merrill Patient Library is designed to provide popular reading material (available for short term check-out), while the patient is in treatment at Broughton Hospital. We provide a comfortable environment that is stimulating and enriching for use by patients of Broughton Hospital. For example, there is a small fountain as one enters the library, with the sounds of quietly splashing water filling the library, and promoting relaxation to its users. Sofas and comfortable furniture as well as tables and chairs grouped together add to the atmosphere. An outdoor porch with flowers, and wicker furniture is also available. Resources available for patients are varied by topic and media type (e.g., Internet access, area newspapers, movies, music CDs, video games) for the pleasure of patients in using leisure time.  The physical environment is utilized by individual patients or for use in psychosocial intervention programs by Recreational Therapists and other clinical staff.  A librarian assistant is available to assist patients in using the patient library and oversight is provided by a certified librarian.
