				The Social Work Department is composed of thirty-one social workers and a clinical chaplain who are assigned throughout the hospital. The Department works closely and cooperatively with all staff disciplines in the hospital, with patients’ families (as appropriate), and with and with community agency representatives in order to assist the patient in achieving his/her optimal personal, psychological, physical, and vocational growth consistent with his/her capacities. We hold the belief that all individuals have some capacity for growth and development. Our focus is on the individual and family to enhance the coping capacity of each individual served, enabling him/her to assume responsibilities in life’s activities to the best of his/her ability. Through the identification of problems and experiences that hamper the individual’s ability to achieve his/her goals, social work practitioners offer professional services directed toward mutual resolution.

Social Work services are provided to help maximize the social functioning of the patient. These are directed toward enhancing the coping capacity of the patient and family, modifying environmental influences leading to or aggravating mental illness, and increasing public understanding and acceptance of mental illness. Social workers at this facility strive to create a favorable climate in which patients are supported and encouraged to achieve as nearly normal living as possible, safeguarding human and civil rights, and fostering the human dignity and personal worth of each individual.


	Social workers, as members of the treatment team, have primary responsibility for psychosocial assessment, interim treatment services, and discharge planning. The social worker serves as a primary link between patient, his/her family, and the community, and is available for consultation to other staff.
