The Specialty Services Division (Division S) has five (5) wards with an operating capacity of ninety-two (92), serving the needs of those with psychiatric disorders, ages 12-18 (Adolescent Services), adults ages 18 and above, who are also deaf and use ASL as their primary means of communication (Deaf Services), and adults ages 65 and older (geropsychiatry) or patients under the age of 65 with functional impairments who can best be served in the geropsychiatry milieu.
The patient composition includes: Two wards with a bed capacity of 38 for adolescents ages 12-18. The primary function is to diagnose and treat adolescents with psychiatric disorders, to restore them to optimal levels of functioning and return them to the community. One ward with a bed capacity of 14 for persons from across the entire state who are 18 and over and are deaf, with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues, and use ASL as their primary means of communication. This population is comprised of acute and longer stay patients who reflect various diagnostic groups. Two wards with a bed capacity of 40 for older adults ages 65 and above, with some younger persons who have impairments of function, which suggest more appropriate management in this setting. The population is comprised of acute and longer stay patients, who at times reflect various diagnostic groups including a significant population affected by cognitive dysfunction and physical illness.
