Volunteer Services

The purpose of the Volunteer Services Department is to develop and maintain a comprehensive volunteer program with support from the community. Through education, recruitment, and appropriate use of volunteers and donations, Volunteer Services complements the services provided through the State budget.

Volunteer Services emphasizes the perspective that was expressed by Seth P. Hunt, Jr., Hospital Director/CEO as follows: "Broughton Hospital sets standards of care, rather than simply attempting to meet them.  Support from volunteers will assist staff in providing the highest quality direct patient care possible."

The Volunteer Services Department represents the Hospital through public relations, communication with community groups, civic organizations and churches.

The following are specific programs of the Volunteer Services Department in addition to the special events sponsored by the department:

Individual Volunteer

Group Volunteers

Junior Volunteers

Interns/Service Learning

Patient Outings: Area churches and civic groups are sought to host a group of patients for a meal and entertainment.

Ward Visitation: Several groups provide regular, monthly ward visits. Some groups have been visiting for more than 30 years.

Junior Volunteer Program: This is a program for junior volunteers ages 12-17 which involves interaction with the older adult population. The program includes bed making, assisting and taking patients outside, reading, and writing letters. On-the-job supervision is by the ward nurse and the certified nursing assistant. In addition, the program includes helping sort donations, and assisting clerical staff in various offices. The junior volunteer must have written consent by parent of guardian at the time of orientation/registration.

Patient Sponsorship: We always need patient sponsors from the community. Each sponsor donates $10 each month, which is deposited to the patient's personal account for their use. This is so important for those who have no income or other resources.

Easter Activities: Volunteer Services provides refreshments for the Hospital Easter parties. Egg hunts, jelly beans, cupcakes and punch are enjoyed by all.

Tours: Special tours of the hospital are conducted by Volunteer Services staff. Volunteer Services staff also speak to community groups about Broughton history and its programs.

Operation Christmas: Volunteer Services staff begin late summer to plan with the 37 counties in Western North Carolina to provide patients with gifts for Christmas. With your help and that of the many concerned and dedicated staff, we try to make the Holiday Season as special as possible for our patients.

Cheer Fund: The Cheer Fund provides financial help for patients and ward needs. All financial and material donations to Broughton Hospital are tax deductible. Donations are made to: Broughton Hospital, Volunteer Services, 1000 S. Sterling Street, Morganton N. C. 28655. Please make your check to Broughton Hospital and designate for Cheer Fund. We send a receipt, along with letter of acknowledgment.
